Tomato Taste Tests
March 18 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Ever wondered which are the best tasting tomatoes varieties to grow? Come along to our Tomato Taste Test evening to find out. This exciting, community based event is designed to help you understand the importance of variety selection.
This is a new and exciting event concept for Leaf, Root & Fruit!
Bring along some of your tasty, home grown tomatoes and share them with our growing community. Everyone will have the opportunity to taste tomatoes of different varieties. At the end of the evening we will crown the Grand Tomato Champion!
The evening is planned as follows:
6:30 pm: participants arrive and fill out information cards on their tomatoes. Tomatoes are prepared for tasting
6:45 pm: A quick chat by Duncan on his experience with growing different varieties of tomatoes
7:00 pm: Tomato tasting and scoring (including using a refractometer to measure the nutrient density)
8:00 pm: Mingling and networking as scores are tallied
8:30 pm: Announcement of Grand Champion Tomato (and its grower) as scored by the group
If you don’t have enough tomatoes to share with our group, then that’s ok, there’s a second ticket option. This ticket is more expensive to cover the cost of drinks and (non-tomato) nibbles for the event.
Bring as many varieties of tomatoes as you like. But please bring each variety in enough quantity for at least 25 taste tests. So that’s 25 cherry tomatoes or 4 or 5 large slicing tomatoes. The more varieties you bring, the cheaper your ticket, and the more successful the event will be (and the more likely you’ll be Grand Champion Tomato Grower!)
